War veteran presented with radio
A Second World War veteran has been presented with a BWBF radio so she can enjoy memories of her time as a Spitfire pilot.
Joy Lofthouse is one of the few remaining Air Transport Auxiliary pilots who flew Spitfires in the Second World War.
The 93-year-old veteran recently worked with Forces Radio BFBS on a documentary about her extraordinary story and the charity then contacted British Wireless to see if we could help.
We have provided Joy, who lives in Cirencester, with one of our Concerto 2 sets so she can play her story whenever she likes.
BFBS also got together a collection of songs and music from the era for Joy which she will now be able to listen to whenever she likes.
Joy’s eyesight has deteriorated to the point she no longer uses her computer and she can’t see the CD player buttons, so having an adapted set will make things much easier for her.
BFBS presenter Amy Casey said: “These ladies were the first pilots in the Royal Air Force and were known as The Spitfire Girls.
“Joy’s story is incredible – she’s an exceptional and inspiring woman.”
BWBF’s CEO Margaret Grainger said: “We were delighted to be able to link up with BFBS to help this lovely lady.
“Historically we’ve had a really close relationship with BFBS and we are pleased to be able to support our veterans whenever we can.
“It was fascinating to hear all about Joy’s past and we hope she enjoys her new radio.”
