British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF) is a national charity that supports people with sight loss. We're undergoing an exciting transformation from a device-provision charity into the UK's leading technology empowerment service for people with sight loss. 

Alongside this service transformation, we're undergoing a strategic rebrand. This provides the perfect platform to launch our new positioning as the UK's technology empowerment service for people with sight loss.

We're addressing the sector's most critical gap—flexible, specialist support to help people with sight loss confidently use technology to live independently, stay connected, access information, and engage with the world on their own terms. 

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to build and nurture a nationwide volunteer network that will transform how people with sight loss access technology support. As Volunteer Coordinator, you'll be the heartbeat of our volunteer programme, recruiting, supporting, and championing volunteers who deliver life-changing technology support across the UK. 

You'll ensure volunteers feel valued, supported, and equipped to deliver excellent support while managing capacity, retention, and community building. 

Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Design and deliver recruitment campaigns 
  • Manage application process, conduct interviews, and strategically recruit for geographic coverage 
  • Coordinate onboarding including DBS checks, 
  • Work with Project Manager and VI trainers to support delivery of training programmes 
  • Create and maintain volunteer handbooks and reference materials 

Support & Supervision

  • Provide day-to-day support as primary point of contact, holding regular check-ins on wellbeing, workload, and satisfaction 
  • Coordinate peer support networks and mentoring relationships 
  • Manage volunteer capacity and workload distribution to prevent burnout 

Scheduling & Deployment

  • Match volunteers to service users based on geography, technology expertise, and availability 
  • Coordinate deployment across telephone support, online support, group courses, peer support groups, hub locations, and home visits 
  • Track volunteer hours and ensure responsive allocation meeting target timelines 

Retention, Recognition & Community Building

  • Implement retention strategies and design recognition programmes celebrating achievements 
  • Create progression pathways and development opportunities for experienced volunteers 
  • Facilitate volunteer peer networks, coordinate regular learning sessions and knowledge sharing 
  • Build volunteer team identity through online forums, social events, newsletters, and communications 

Administration & Reporting 

  • Maintain accurate volunteer records, database, and track recruitment, retention, and deployment metrics 
  • Prepare regular reports for Project Manager on volunteer programme health 
  • Gather volunteer feedback and identify opportunities to improve volunteer experience 

Person Specification

Essential 

  • Proven experience recruiting, coordinating, and supporting volunteers 
  • Knowledge of DBS processes and safeguarding requirements 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build rapport and trust quickly 
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage multiple volunteers and priorities simultaneously 
  • Experience scheduling and deploying volunteers across different activities or locations 
  • Understanding of volunteer motivation, retention, and what makes volunteers feel valued 
  • Strong communication skills and comfortable using databases, scheduling systems, and digital tools 
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently in remote environment 

Highly Desirable 

  • Experience building volunteer programmes or managing significant growth 
  • Lived experience of sight loss 
  • Background in disability, visual impairment, or technology sectors 
  • Experience with geographically distributed or remote volunteer networks
