Christmas Appeal 2021

One gift – a lifetime of joy

Throughout the long history of the British Wireless Christmas Appeal we have always valued the positive difference that each and every festive donation makes to the day-to-day life of someone who is visually impaired.

No-one appreciates this difference more than Janice Newman from London. Janice has been supported by British Wireless since the late 1960s and, thanks to kind donations made to us all those years ago, she has enjoyed a lifetime of accessible entertainment.

Janice still has the first radio we gave her proudly positioned on a bedside table and she says it continues to produce “quality, superior sound”.

She told us “you’d have a job to better it! If I was castaway on a desert island my radio would be my top priority to take with me – my luxury item!”

As a keen gardener Janice has an allotment that keeps her busy, but admitted she worried how she would cope during further lockdowns last winter. “Isolation is so bad for you and complete silence is terrible,” she said.

“When you have your favourite radio stations that you listen to it’s nice to hear voices you can recognise. It’s like having an old friend with you all the time.”

Recently Janice got back in touch with us to see if we could once again help her out. She needed a smaller, portable set to take with her to the allotments.

The new Roberts Play we have provided her, with its bright yellow bumper surround, pre-set stations and rechargeable batteries, was just what she needed.

Now the radio goes into the garden with Janice and her guide dog Hugo and they can take it easily from flowerbed to greenhouse.

“I like to listen to Radio 2 as I enjoy the conversations as well as the music,” she says, “and it’s good for up-to-date news - and weather forecasts for my gardening!”

Supporting people like Janice is only possible thanks to the ongoing generosity of people like you. And if you make a donation towards our work this Christmas just think – it might still be bringing joy to someone living with sight loss 50 years from now!

On behalf of everyone at British Wireless please accept our heartfelt thanks for your support. We send you all our best wishes for the festive season.
